NOTE: U.S. Army Spc. Christopher D. Horton, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, died Sept. 9, 2011, in Zurmat District, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. The 26-year-old was assigned to 1st Battalion, 279 Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma National Guard. Horton is survived by his wife, Jane; parents David and Cherie; brother, Nicholas; sister, Tenley; and many other friends and family.
First of our Hero Saturdays. Horton is a partner workout, which is always fun. Aim to partner with equal skilled buddies so you (ideally) use only one Barbell. If this isn’t possible, you can have two Barbells per team. The workout is written so that you share the workload however you want to with your partners, so there is no minimum work requirement per movement. Ideally, we want the partners to share the load, which is another great reason to partner up with similar ability athletes. To keep the intensity high, keep the reps short and switch constantly. Make sure you can adapt in the moment and if a buddy starts to fatigue, you can take on a few more reps.
The 50m Buddy Carry should also (ideally) be shared, but if you have, for some reason, one person who loves to Buddy Carry, then they are welcome to do all 9 rounds! For the Buddy Carry, you can also carry a heavy MB.
The Clean and Jerk can be done as a Power Clean and Push or Split Jerk. The weight shouldn’t be so heavy that you NEED to Split Jerk, just that you may prefer to.
Scale the Bar Muscle Ups to Jumping Bar Muscle Ups as needed. If you are really intimidated by the Buddy Carry, you can carry a heavy object and just pass it off to each other as needed.
Fitness: For the Clean and Jerk, use a load that you can perform 5-10 reps unbroken any time you pick it up. If anyone is able to do Jumping Muscle Ups, then try that, otherwise perform Jumping Chest to Bar Pullups. If you want to Buddy Carry, great! Otherwise, run with a MB and alternate who runs each round.
